                           THE SHARING COMMUNITY

Some of you might be familiar with The Sharing Community, which is located at 1 Hudson Street in downtown Yonkers in the Getty Square area near St. John‘s Episcopal Church. Since October 24, 2008, some West Center members and friends have been volunteering to serve a hot noon meal the second Saturday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Food Service Director, Nadine Burns-Lyons, has come to West Center twice to speak to the congregation as part of the service in “Moments for Mission” and then stayed for coffee hour and a discussion in the Library at 12:30 pm.

The Sharing Community has been operating for 25 years, and Nadine has been affiliated with them for 18 years. In that time, the needs of the community continue to grow and the number of people coming to them for assistance continues to grow as well, especially in the recent economy with people losing jobs, becoming homeless, and unable to provide food and necessities for their families. The Sharing Community has many programs ranging from Mental Health, Shelter, Food and Nutrition, Health Care, Supportive Housing, Homeless Outreach, and HIV/Aids.

They welcome contributions in many forms, one of which is volunteering to help serve a midday meal for the soup kitchen. Many churches and groups pick one day a month to help by supplying the food to be served or volunteering to help serve the food. I also found out that they do accept gently used clothing. I took a bag of clothes there during the week around noon and got a nice letter in the mail thanking me for my donation. I would think that coats (in good condition) would be welcome when the weather gets colder.

We encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering to help serve the hot noon meal the second Saturday of the month at The Sharing Community to join us. We need move volunteers as it is helpful to have two at the minimum and three is better. We have had to cancel some months this summer as we didn’t have enough volunteers, due to vacations and previous commitments. It is a rewarding experience and the time goes by fast. It’s a good way to spend a few hours with interesting West Center people, and the people we serve are very thankful to have us there and tell us so and ask when we will be back. (Maybe they’re hoping to get an extra piece of chicken but we like to believe they like having us there!)
